I spent the morning doing street art and hand selling a few copies of my book in front of the courthouse in charming little Nashville, Indiana. I'm always surprised by the amount of wonder and awe that art inspires in children and always befuddled by the adults in which it inspires disdain or fear.
I wore flower-printed J. Crew shorts and sockless Chuck Taylors--I looked as threatening as a dandelion and still parents occupationally pawed their children in close as they walked by because there was a strange man with a sketch pad on the street drawing the American flag wavering in the shot summer wind.
Fear of the unknown is a powerful thing, but if it's got flowers on its shorts there's probably nothing to fear. You can quote me on that.
